Newsletter 34/16

All staff in school have recently had training on Safeguarding and Child Protection.  An issue that came up over and over again was children on the internet.  One really good way to think about internet safety is to apply the same rules as Stranger Danger.  Would you let your child talk to strangers—including other children if they were in town or at the park?  You probably wouldn’t but do you really know who they are chatting to online?  It may be worth taking a moment to chat with your child about e-safety—they should all know about it from lessons in school, so they should be able to give you lots of information.

Every family should have received a Scholastic Book Club leaflet this week.  Please can any orders be returned to school via the “green box” by Wednesday 29th June 2016.  Books must be paid for by cheque or debit card only, no cash please.  Please note cheques should be made payable to Scholastic and not Summerfields.  Thank you.

On Friday 24th June 2016 we are holding a “mufti” day in aid of the Summer Fayre being held by the Friends of Summerfields. For a minimum of £1.00 donation children can come to school dressed in “mufti”.  Please remember sensible shoes though—no high heels or sandals!  However children in Years 5 and 6 should NOT come to school in “mufti” that day as they have already been asked to come to school in their PE kits as they are all attending the Newport Olympics at Medina College.

Just a reminder that the Summer Fayre is on Friday 1st July 2016 from 5.00pm-8.00pm.  If you are able to offer any assistance, please let the school office know.  Without the help of parents these events cannot take place so please help if you can.

Congratulations to Macey and Hannah from Year 5 who are the first children to achieve a ‘Gold Housepoint Award’ this year. They have earned 200 house points. Well done!

Every child should have this week received a letter regarding our Sports Day and Family Picnic.  This will be similar to the picnic we held last week for HM The Queen’s 90th birthday.  We are inviting all families to join us for a picnic on the school field on Wednesday 13th July 2016 at 12 noon.  If your child normally receives a free school meal they will receive a school picnic instead.  Therefore please complete the slip accordingly with their choice of sandwich filling.  If no slip is received, we will assume that they DO NOT require a school picnic lunch and you wish to provide your child with a picnic lunch from home instead.  All orders for school picnics must be returned by Wednesday 29th June 2016.  If your child is not entitled to a free school meal but you wish to purchase a school picnic, the cost is £2.15.  Again please return the slip and arrange payment accordingly.  Please note all orders must be received by WEDNESDAY 29TH JUNE 2016 at the latest.  If any slips are received after this date they will be returned and you will have to provide your child with their own lunch.  If you have any queries please do not hesitate to speak to the school office.

Over the next few weeks we have lots and lots of exciting activities that children are attending.  Please can you remember that children going on school trips will require plenty to drink, a sun hat and sun cream applied before they come to school.  If the weather looks unsettled they will also need to bring a waterproof coat.  Please also ensure slips and payments are returned promptly as staff are still spending lots of time chasing up outstanding replies. Thank you.

Say Sorry.  Let people see that you can tell the truth and know how to say sorry.
