Newsletter 10/15

There has been a lot in the news recently about the Isle of Wight Council’s appeal case regarding Fixed Penalty Notices for taking holiday during term time.  Can we reiterate to parents that the current legislation still stands and any absence during school time may be liable for a Fixed Penalty Notice.

There is much research that shows a strong correlation between high attendance and high attainment for all children.  A recent publication from the Department for Education indicated that even missing a short amount of time from school can reduce every pupil’s chance of securing the grades they are capable of achieving.  For further details visit

An important letter was sent out this week regarding School Money.  From Monday we are going to trial a new system whereby parents will pay for school trips and school dinners on-line, rather than via the school office. This is a similar system to what other Primary and Senior schools use. In order for this to work, we require EVERYONE’S up to date mobile phone number.  Please complete the letter and return to school as soon as possible.  In future, text will be the way that school contacts parents most of the time. If you have any queries, or would like any additional information regarding this change, please speak to the office.

Please note the following class assemblies which are taking place in the next few weeks.  These assemblies commence at 2.50pm — all welcome.

Thursday 26th November 2015—Year 4

Thursday 3rd December 2015—Year 3

We have had a lot of sickness in school over the past couple of weeks.  Please remember to contact school EVERY day that your child is unable to come to school.  On their return a yellow slip MUST be completed and given in to the school office.  Until the form is completed and returned, your child’s absence will be marked down as “unauthorised”. If a yellow slip is not received within 10 days of the absence, it will remain as “unauthorised”.

Just to remind parents, if a child has sickness or diarrhoea they should NOT return to school until 48 hours after their last bout of illness.  This is to protect EVERYONE in school.  Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Slips have gone out this week about the Christmas activities in school and a separate slip regarding Christmas Lunch.  In Key Stage 1, please only let us know if your child DOES NOT want a Christmas lunch.  In Key Stage 2 if your child is entitled to a Free School Meal, they will automatically receive this lunch.  Again please only let us know if they do not want to have it.  For everyone else, please complete the slip and return with payment to the school office by FRIDAY 4TH DECEMBER 2015 at the latest.  After this date, no more requests will be accepted as the food needs to be ordered by this date.  If your child would like the vegetarian option of Quorn Roast, please let the office know, again before Friday 4th December 2015.  If you have any queries, please speak to the office.

The Friends of  Summerfields are holding a Christmas Fayre  TONIGHT from 6.00pm-8.00pm  There will be lots of stalls and activities to take part in, including the chance to meet Olaf!  Remember this is raising funds for your children at Summerfields.

The word of the week is “calamitous”.

Play fair—Help your friends to get on with their work by keeping quiet during lesson times.
