SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB
Every family should have now received a Scholastic Book Club leaflet. Please can any orders be returned to school by Wednesday 24th September 2014 via the “Green Box”. Payment must be by debit/credit card or cheque please. Unfortunately cash cannot be accepted. Thank you.
As part of Anti-Bullying Week in November, the Isle of Wight Council is hosting a poetry competition around the theme of bullying. The poem needs to be written by a young person and be based on the anti-bullying week theme of “Let’s stop bullying for all”. Entries need to be in by Friday 26th September 2014. Send your entry with your name, age, year group and school to firstname.lastname@example.org.
On Monday 29th September 2014 Cardwell and Simons will be in school to take individual photographs of every child in school.
PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL 2015 ADMISSIONS
We have been advised that in order to encourage as many parents to apply online as possible, School Admissions will NOT be automatically forwarding application forms for children to apply for admission to primary or secondary schools next year. All applications should be made online. The deadline for applications to primary schools is 4.30pm on Thursday 15th January 2015. Applications for secondary school should be made by Friday 31st October 2014 at 4.30pm. Please note that if applications are received late, even a day late, they will be considered by the local authority AFTER those received on time. LET’S GROW 2014
We are again joining in the Morrisons’ “Let’s Grow” campaign whereby vouchers are collected and can be exchanged for gardening equipment. Please remember to ask your family and friends to collect the vouchers as well. Vouchers are available to be collected until 26th October 2014. Thank you.
“RE-USE YA SHOES WEEK”
Thank you for the donations of old shoes in aid of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. They are holding a Family Day at Sandown airport on Sunday 21st September 2014 from 10am-5pm when the air ambulance will be flying, other emergency vehicles will also be on display along with stalls and children’s activities.
CARISBROOKE COLLEGE OPEN EVENING
Carisbrooke College are holding an open evening for September 2015 intake (current Year 6 pupils) on Thursday 9th October 2014 between 5.00pm and 8.00pm. There is a welcome and introduction from the Head Teacher at 6.30pm.
A WINTER SHORT STORY AND POETRY COMPETITION
The Isle of Wight Fair Writers Circle is holding a Winter Short Story and Poetry Competition named “Santa’s Helper(s)” in aid of various Isle of Wight charities. There are prizes for the winners and the winning short story or poem will be published in the Isle of Wight County Press. There are under 12, under 18 and over 18 categories. The cost is £2.00 for children under 18 to enter, with up to 750 words. Entry forms and rules are available from the school office and the closing date is 10th November 2014.
KIDS’ ART AT QUAY ARTS
For children aged between 8-12 years there are different workshops being held every week at Quay Arts, Newport. Sessions are £6.00 each or £50.00 for a term. The first session starts on Saturday 20th September. For full details contact Quay Arts on 822490.
Newport library have started a Lego Club for children over 5 years of age. The club takes place at Newport Children’s Library from 3.30pm-4.30pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Squash is provided and parents are encouraged to “stay and play”. See the library’s website for full details.
THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU ARE 11¾ ….. Play conkers. Remember it is not always the biggest conker that wins! You will need some string, a grown up to help you put the string through the centre of the conker and an opponent. Top tip—to test if a conker will be any good, put some conkers in a bucket of water. All those that sink to the bottom are winners, those that float are losers!
